Environment Canada is predicting a significant change is likely from unseasonably cold to unseasonably warm weather over the next week.

“A gradual warming trend has already begun in the Southern Interior as the flow aloft turns from northwest to more westerly.  This warming will continue through the end of the week to return temperatures to a range closer to the long term average,” says Doug Lundquist, meteorologist.

In the middle to later part of next week (April 24-26) a strong ridge of high pressure will build over the province bringing very warm air with temperatures in the mid-20s over Southern BC.  As the high pressure system moves on, it  may be followed by a breakdown which might include rain.

But this warming trend may not be welcome news for everyone. High temperatures will initiate the mid to high elevation snow melts, which could raise the risk of some localized flooding, especially in smaller streams.

“In addition, if the period of warm weather is prolonged or followed by significant rainfall, the flood risk would increase and would become more widespread,” says Lundquist in a weather update.
