Fort St. James Council held a meeting on June 22. The following are some highlights and conclusions from that evening:
Council adopted the Fort St. James 2015 Annual Municipal Report. The report is mandatory for all municipalities to provide information to the provincial government regarding accomplishments and goals and previous and future projects and goals.
Cardboard Recycling options were discussed. The Regional District of Bulkley Nechako announced last year that they would discontinue accepting corrugated cardboard at all of their waste transfer stations and landfills, effective July 1, 2016.
The result is that Fort St. James will no longer be able to collect cardboard with garbage.
The District of Fort St. James purchased the Integris Recycling Building from Greening Up Fort last year. It was then leased to Nak’azdli Band and securing funds has been an ongoing issue.
Council will continue to discuss various options regarding cardboard recycling.
Bike to Work Week was a huge success with many participants in Fort St. James taking part.
Over 50 communities in British Columbia took part in promotion of healthy living. The event was held on May 30 – June 5.
The Animal Regulation Bylaw Amendment regarding backyard hens has been approved by District.
Fort St. James residents living in R-1 (residential-single family) are now allowed to keep four hens for personal use.
The Nak’azdli Whut’en Band is currently in the process of creating a geographical name change proposal to have the geographical location known as “Witch Lake” changed back to its original Dak’elh (Carrier) name which is “Onjo Lake”.
“Onjo” means Caribou Lake in the English language and is a reflection of the once prominent caribou population in that area.
Nak’azdli Whut’en Band has asked for feedback regarding this change from the District of Fort. St. James.
Trails and Mountain Bike Nechako is currently creating a Recreation and Tourism Planning Project.
The community driven recreation and tourism planning project initiative is all about creating a trails strategy and to support the development of mountain bike recreation and tourism.
The District of Fort St. James has agreed to support this initiative.
