Fort St. James Council held a regular meeting on Nov. 25. The following are some highlights and conclusions from the evening:
Emily Colombo, economic development officer/deputy corporate officer for the District of Fort St. James officially said goodbye to council during a presentation where she highlighted her experiences and appreciation to the community. She will begin her new position in Quesnel, B.C. in December.
Council decided that the Pioneer Log Home Bench, won by the District during the 2015 Winter Games will be placed at the Murray Ridge Ski Area during the winter months and in an alternate location during the summer such as Spirit Square or the Community Garden. “It commemorates a special event and everyone should see it,” Mayor Rob MacDougall said.
Mayor MacDougall attended the Highway 16 Symposium which gathered various members from different communities to act on next steps for safe and sustainable transportation. MacDougall presented information on the Seniors Helping Seniors program which has now sparked interest in other communities.
The community is into their third year implementing the Façade Improvement Fund that supports local businesses in the community with their outward appearance and helps them mesh with other community buildings while meeting specific requirements. So far, three businesses have taken part and two are pending. Council agrees that this is a positive initiative.
Council is outlining scholarship funding for students who will be attending post-secondary school. Council will follow up with the criteria to apply.
