FortisBC Energy Inc. is proposing to construct a new 161 kilometre pipeline that will parallel, for the most part, the existing natural gas pipeline already in operation between Kingsvale, and Oliver.
The Kingsvale to Oliver Natural Gas Pipeline Reinforcement Project (COR)will deviate from the existing route in a 61 kilometre segment just west of Keremeos to a point near Princeton.
Fortis presented an outline of the project to several Similkameen politicians and other interested parties at an information meeting in Princeton on Feb. 15.
The presentation outlined First Nations bands potentially impacted by the project, which will cross the Ashnola and Blind Creek reserves of the Lower Similkameen Indian Band.
To date, Fortis has commenced preliminary field studies to determine whether a technically and environmentally feasible route existed primarily located alongside the existing pipeline (known as looping).
Dialogue has been initiated between local governments and First Nations bands, and the provincial and federal environmental assessment acts have been initiated. In addition, application information requirements for a BCEAO / CEAA harmonized review have been drafted.
The environmental application for the pipeline could be filed in the fourth quarter of 2013, with construction taking place between the second and third quarter of 2015. Public comments regarding the project are now being accepted. More information is available at the following website:
