Forum gets personal about health care

11th annual Lafayette Health Awareness Forum explores personalized medicine Oct. 6 at UVic

  • Oct. 4, 2016 12:00 p.m.

The 11th annual Lafayette Health Awareness Forum brings together four expert speakers who are on the cutting edge of Personalized – or precision – medicine, Oct. 6 at the University of Victoria.

The innovative approach to disease prevention and treatment takes into account variances in people’s genes, environments and lifestyles, challenging the one-size-fits-all approach common to many medical treatments.

The forum aims to answer questions about what personalized medicine is and how it can affect individuals and society. Presenters include UVic philosopher Eike-Henner Kluge; Patrick Macleod from UVic’s Centre for Biomedical Research; Brad Nelson, director and a scientist at the BC Cancer Agency’s Deeley Research Centre; and Scott Hofer, Director at UVic’s Institute on Aging & Lifelong Health.

The Lafayette Health Awareness Series began in 2006 with a dialogue on breast cancer, a disease that impacted the quartet profoundly when one of its members was diagnosed and treated in 2001.

This free forum was created to provide expert and updated information to the public on various health topics.

The Thursday, Oct. 6 forum beings at 7 p.m. in the David Lam Auditorium, A-Wing, MacLaurin Building, UVic

Admission is free and everyone is welcome, but people are encouraged to reserve a seat at lafayettestringquartet.ca.
