WHALLEY — A pair is facing assault charges after a woman apparently went on a wild stabbing spree inside a Surrey apartment early Saturday, sending four people to hospital.

RCMP say at around 12:15 a.m. Saturday, authorities received several 911 calls about a fight that broke out at an apartment in the 10500-block of University Avenue in Surrey’s crime-ridden Whalley neighbourhood.

Freelance photographer Ryan Sterling witnessed several people stumbling out onto the street with stab wounds. He said he heard someone screaming for help from the second floor of the rental building.

“A lot of people were out on the street, they were bleeding. I think one guy got cut in the head,” he said, on Saturday.

“There was one guy who kept saying ‘I don’t know what happened she just walked in and started stabbing people.’ They were a bit mouthy (with police) but in the end they were all fine. I don’t think the injuries were that serious. The woman was put in handcuffs.”

Sterling said three of the victims walked to the ambulance, while one guy needed a stretcher.

When the RCMP arrived, they found four men suffering from stab wounds. They were taken to hospital for treatment of non life threatening injuries.

Mounties say a 36-year-old woman and a 45-year-old man, both residents of Surrey, were arrested at the apartment.  The man was suffering from a minor stab wound.

Both are facing charges of assault with a weapon, according to RCMP Staff Sgt. Joe Johal.

He said it doesn’t appear the incident happened during a party, and noted that it was too early in the investigation to say whether gang activity or drugs were involved.

All of the victims and the suspects are known to each other. He said investigators are still gathering statements but at this point they do not have a motive for the stabbing.
