And on the 53rd day, it rained.

Light showers have fallen on the Fraser Valley after a record-breaking dry spell, providing slight relief for the parched conditions.

Rain will continue to fall through the night (Aug. 7), and tomorrow will be slightly cloudy with a 60 per cent chance of showers before the sun and heat returns next week.

The reprieve is the result of a low-pressure system being pushed on to the coast, which could result in 10 to 20 milimetres across the Lower Mainland, according to The Weather Network.

This has been the longest-recorded rain drought at Environment Canada’s weather station at the Abbotsford International Airport. The previous record of 39 days, was set in 1961.
