Fraser Valley Transplant Support Network will be hosting a free event with guest speaker Dr. Megan Levings in Langley.

It takes place on Thursday, May 30 at 7 p.m. at the Fraser River Presentation theatre at Langley Township Civic Hall.

Levings is one of the researchers chosen to play a key role in a new national organ transplant research program announced last month by the federal government.

Levings is presently studying the application of stem cell technology to liver transplants in an effort to reduce the need for anti-rejection drugs.

This research will have positive ramifications for all organ transplant patients who take these medications to ensure their organs do not reject.

Levings looks forward to speaking to Langley residents about this exciting new research, so the network encourages all of those affected by transplant to attend.

The Fraser Valley Transplant Network was established by Charlie and Diane Fox, Tanya Tait and Todd Hauptman as a place of support and to facilitate networking for individuals affected by transplants.

The network aims to host quarterly meetings with experts in various areas of transplantation.

“This is an excellent opportunity to hear straight from a leading researcher the exciting work being done to improve transplants,” said Charlie Fox, a Township councillor. He is a kidney transplant recipient.
