Freezing rain warning in effect for Kelowna

Rain falling into sub-freezing air will freeze on contact, creating hazardous icy travelling conditions.

Kelowna residents, along with those who live in other interior and coastal B.C. cities, are being warned that freezing rain is on the way and could possibly result in treacherous highway conditions.

Environment Canada released a special weather statement, noting that freezing rain was potentially to fall today and Saturday.

“Bands of moisture will continue to move across the interior today through Saturday. A layer of warm air will also sweep across the coastal mountain tops and over the interior valleys giving the likelihood of above freezing temperatures aloft,” reads the government agency’s report.

“Freezing rain may develop wherever sub-freezing air near the surface persists. Rain falling into sub-freezing air will freeze on contact, creating hazardous icy travelling conditions.”

The weather system causing potential problems will move over the South Coast mountains today and further into the central and southeastern interior overnight.

As drivers are being urged to take extra care, DriveBC is also issuing their own highway warnings

There is a freezing rain warning for the Coquihalla in both directions between Hope and Kamloops until Sunday.

A similar warning has also been issued for the Okanagan Connector, where freezing rain mixed with snow has been forecast for Merritt and West Kelowna until Sunday.
