37 Years Ago (1981): Cariboo Regional District Electoral Area G representative at the time, Bernice Armstrong, requested the area be split into two parts. Armstrong made her request known to the regional district at a board meeting. The director said that her area was 1600 square miles in size, and according to provincial tax rolls, had an assessed value of $46,470,177. The area stretched south from Lac la Hache to the north shore of Green Lake, including the communities of Lac la Hache and the 108 Ranch and ran east to include Bridge Lake.

27 Years Ago (1989): The B.C. Nurses Union strike ended but the dispute continued, said local spokesperson Ellinor MacEwan. She said the local nurses were “very disappointed” with the contract that was imposed under binding arbitration between the union and the Health Labour Relations Association. The deal gave nurses a 21 per cent wage hike over two years, rather than three, which was offered to them by the HLRA before negotiations were stalemated.

25 Years Ago (1991): A lawsuit claiming negligence by the village in connection with the spring’s sewage spill into Bridge Creel had been filed in the B.C. Supreme Court. Filed on behalf of the then owners of the Ferris Walter System at Gateway and the Ponderosa Resort at Canim Lake, it asked for unspecified damages from the village. The suit also asked the court to grant an injunction to prohibit the municipality from operating the existing sewage facility and requiring it to relocate to the lagoons.

20 Years Ago (1998): With the help of an anonymous tip-off, 100 Mile RCMP took down a $300,000 marijuana operation east of Lac la Hache. “It’s a medium-sized operation,” said then Const. Bill Leslie. “It’s a good bust.” He said that RCMP was provided information about the operation. Police raided the site on the morning of Aug. 20 and with the help of a police dog, apprehended and arrested a 38-year-old male suspect without incident.

13 Years Ago (2005): School District No. 27, announced they would be introducing a new version of the alternate calendar introduced the previous year for the 2005/2006 school year. “We actually did a survey from last year’s calendar, very extensive, and when we incorporated a new calendar we consulted with different stakeholders,” said Wayne Leckie, the superintendent at the time. A key component of the alternative calendar was a reduction in school days. According to the district’s survey analysis, the placement of these days proved inconvenient.
