38 Years Ago (1980): Dusty from logging trucks using the industrial road which connected with Exeter Road near the school bus garage was causing a considerable amount of inconvenience to neighbouring businesses and may also have been creating a potential traffic hazard. A new frontage road was being constructed north of town to allow industrial traffic to make use of the new junction of Canim Lake Road and Highway 97.

28 Years Ago (1990): Initial attack firefighting crews were on alert ready for battle against forest fires in the area. Between 12 noon on Monday and 6 a.m. Tuesday, some 1,041 lightning strikes were recorded in the 100 Mile forest district with more lightning expected to begin on Tuesday afternoon. Monday’s electrical storm was blamed for five new fires in the Hendrix and Lang Lake areas. These and two other man-caused fires were reported to be “spot-sized.”

21 Years Ago (1997): Repairs on the Stan Halcro Arena were slated to begin in a week’s time for a fall opening. THe next big task for the South Cariboo Recreation Commission was determining how much different users should pay to use the facility. “Our path is already set. How we’re going to do it exactly, what the amounts might be, is what we have to find out,” said commission chair Greg Sehr.

15 Years Ago (2003): The Emergency Reception Centre at the Lodge Conference & Retreat Centre was buzzing with activity on the morning of Aug. 6. It was hot and sunny once again and just 90 km away, the McLure wildfire was continuing its rapid expansion. “It’s a more neighbourly type of atmosphere; it’s not this official, cold shoulder,” said evacuee Willy Nielsen, who along with his wife, were staying with a son in the Horse Lake area.

8 Years Ago (2010): “The resort owners [are] really frustrated by the taxes they’re paying on their property and whether it’s fair and reasonable considering the escalation in taxes,” said Community and Rural Development Minister Ben Stewart. “We’re going to do a review of their assessments, their tax classification and the increases, and try to make certain that it’s clear to them as to how that’s happened.”
