34 Years Ago (1984): Over three hundred people were expected to attend at the opening of the renovated 100 Mile House Community Hall. The total cost of the new look and the installation of a mini-park around it was estimated at $322,000. Community Club member Tim Wood compared the old hall to a "third-rate school gym," adding that people would be delighted with how beautiful it now is inside.

29 Years Ago (1989): A BC Rail police blitz ticketing 15 drivers for not stopping at the train crossing at Exeter Station raised the ire of about 50 loggers and mill workers who put their names on a petition to install lights there. While there is no problem in the summer, during the winter it’s a different story, said Ed Dumont who started the petition. “It’s nearly impossible to start going again on the hill before the tracks once you come to a complete stop.”

24 Years Ago (1994): The hotel industry was firmly opposed to carrying an additional two per cent tax burden to replace funding cuts elsewhere, said regional director Peter Bono. The Cariboo Regional District “is like any other body seeking to find funds,” said Bono, who felt hotels were unfairly taxed. “We’re not cash cows.” The CRD was looking for an alternate way to fund tourism promotion.

18 Years Ago (2000): The then newly opened long-term care facility, Fischer Place, stood empty. Cariboo South MLA David Zirnhelt said a six-week lag between a facility being ready and getting staff isn’t bad. Liberal Health Critic Colin Hansen said it’s ridiculous to build a facility without an operating budget in place. Nurse Judy Tyrell said the Community Health Council’s original staffing proposal for only one registered nurse per shift would have been unsafe.

10 Years ago (2008): A 100 Mile House RCMP officer was charged with assault with a weapon after using a Taser during an incident outside Jake’s Pub in December 2006. An internal investigation was conducted by an RCMP Sergeant from Alexis Creek and a special prosecutor from Quesnel was appointed to prosecute the case. The RCMP had been under fire over the use of Taser for months at the time after a deadly Taser incident at Vancouver International Airport.
