Full-on SROAMazing Race

The scavenger hunt madness added extra colour and zeal to downtown Nelson today.

There is something to be said for roaming around town with friends. If you’re around Baker Street in Nelson today, be rest assured those costume clad groups of four running through the streets are not after you, but the top title of the SROAMazing Race known locally for its scavenger hunt madness.

Approximately 19 teams in various attire, like cowboy clad Team El Niño, the goggle and sombrero wearing Taco Team, and the Valhalla Dogsled Team complete with harnessed Bernese Mountain Dogs are racing each other as they decipher clues that will lead them to business and destinations where they must complete an activity.

After changing a mountain bike tire at Gericks, the Taco team used avalanche beacons, with the assistance of a friendly unicorn, to search for a hidden clue at Valhalla. (Pictured below)

Ladies in pink tights used their hockey stick handling skills to hit a target dangling from a hockey net.

The teams have less than three hours to visit at least 10 of 15 stations. The grand prize is a Whitewater day pass, avalanche awareness course and a toque for each of the four team members and the heaps of draw prizes includes cat skiing.

The 2016 Selkirk College Ski Resort Operations and Management Program (SROAM) class is hosting the fifth annual race with funds raised for the Avalanche Awareness Beyond the Boundaries Society.
