Full response by Kelowna RCMP turns out to be false report

False reports divert police and other emergency personnel away from active investigations.

The Kelowna RCMP is investigating an offence of public mischief (leading police into a false investigation/providing false information) after a call of a very serious nature was determined to be a false report.

In an armed response, Kelowna police converged on an apartment building in the 700 block of Leon Avenue around 7:30 p.m. July 9. Due to the high level of risk to public safety, police had established containment around the building and evacuated adjacent units.

Investigators are relieved that no one was injured in the incident but are disturbed at the complete disregard for public safety.

Whenever a false report is received, especially of this nature, it diverts police and other emergency personnel and potentially delays response to legitimate emergencies.

The investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Kelowna RCMP at 250-762-3300 or they may remain anonymous by calling Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS) or leaving a tip online at www.crimstoppers.net
