Hi Neighbour Day sees community come together

Wizards and artists and zucchinis on wheels — it must be Errington’s Hi Neighbour Day.

Those were some of the sights at the 48th annual event, which brought members of the community together for the Errington farmers’ market, good food, friends and fun activities on Saturday, Aug. 19.

The seventh annual Greater Errington Zucchini Races were a highlight this year, with as many adults submitting racers and zucchini show cars as there were kids.

John Olsen, the originator of the race, has since passed organizing duties to Brianna Von Wartburg.

She was the one to let loose the diversely decorated zucchinis down the steep, four-car track, which leads to a small jump and then a straightaway to the finish line just a few feet in front of dozens of onlookers and participants.

Winners in the youth category this year were Kimsley Todd for best in show, and Sampson Sharp in the races.

On the adults’ side, David Parsons took home the best-in-show prize, while Bob Herbison won the races.

Another highlight was the parade, which saw adults and youth march down Grafton Avenue and then south on Errington Road back to the Farmers Market, dressed in all kinds of costumes.

Some channeled the fantastical, garbed as wizards, fairies, princesses and even strange rat-creatures. Others went with a more circus feel, including a clown and a young girl on a unicycle.

The Errington Taekwondo School put on an impressive display of kicks and board-breaking.

Finally, the day was scheduled to finish off with the Hi Neighbour Day Dance in the evening, featuring folk rock band Revolving Doors.
