Gale-force winds, high tides expected in Metro Vancouver

Environment Canada warns flooding is possible along exposed shorelines in low-lying areas

Environment Canada is warning of gale-force winds and possible flooding in low-lying areas in Metro Vancouver Tuesday morning.

The special weather statement was issued for the region, specifically the southeast and southwest: Surrey and Langley and Richmond and Delta. It was issued just after 4 a.m. on Jan. 9, and was expected to be in effect until the early afternoon.

Southwesterly winds are expected to be between 70 and 90 km/h, leading to possible power outages and fallen tree brances.

Environment Canada said large waves, due to gale-force southwest winds, are expected, along with seasonably high tides that have the potential to produce high water levels. Coastal flooding is also possibly along exposd shorelines, especially in low-lying areas.

The weather warning is also in effect for Greater Victoria and the Southern Gulf Islands. It has led to several cancelled ferries between Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland.
