A well-known Langley City businessman made sure the good in people prevails over the bad, by buying John Mercer a new computer over the weekend.
“I’ve seen John walking around town my whole life and so when I read about a thief stealing his specialized computer — and knowing how much enjoyment he got out of using that computer — I knew I could do something about it,” said the donor, who wishes to remain anonymous.
A story in the March 5 edition of The Times told about a thief stealing the computer from Mercer, who is legally blind, and has been since birth.
The City resident got in touch with Mercer shortly afterwards, reading the article and told him to pick out a new laptop. Mercer was driven by his wife Doreen on Saturday to Walnut Grove Computers, where the couple picked out a brand new laptop and the staff there installed all the relevant programs Mercer uses to aid him, including voice programs.
In total, the laptop cost around $1,300 to replace.
“To everyone who donated or wanted to donate we thank you from the bottom of our hearts,” said Doreen.
Mercer actually received three separate offers to buy a new computer.
“I have closed the GoFundMe account as we had a very generous donation made and John will very soon have his new computer,” said Helen Avery, Mercer’s stepdaughter who created the account. “It warms my heart to see how wonderful and kind some people really can be.”
