Brookswood resident Kate Mumford has grown a 650-pound (an estimate based on its measurements) squash in her back yard.
She plans to enter it in the Oct. 11 giant competition at Aldor Acres farm.
Mumford told The Times “This is my second year growing giant vegetables in my Brookswood back garden. Last year, I grew a 375 lb. pumpkin which earned me seventh place at the annual Aldor Acres giant pumpkin weigh-off. This year I started a giant pumpkin and a giant squash to see how big they could get. Unfortunately I lost the pumpkin at about 450 lbs. to rot, but the squash is still growing strong. These two plants have taken up much of our back yard on our quarter-acre lot, much to my husband’s surprise.”
They have had many visitors come to see the green giant. Mumford, 35, says many younger people are becoming interested in growing giant vegetables.
