Golden is celebrating girls while promoting hockey and promoting healthy lifestyles on October 9 at the Golden and District Arena.
For the ninth year of the World Girls’ Ice Hockey Weekend, girls in Golden will get the chance to enjoy ice time, drills, floor ball, yoga, lunch, and more, all for free for girls ages five to 16, through a program with the Golden Minor Hockey Association.
All female hockey players and their friends are invited to register for this event that promotes fun and healthy lifestyles.
“It’s not just about promoting hockey, it’s about promoting healthy relationships,” says parent Ava Pfisterer. “We expect that it’s going to be fun.”
The day will involve mentorship from female coaches, fun, and learning new skills on and off the ice. Lunch will be included, as well as a welcoming package and draw prizes. Full hockey gear is required for this event, and girls without are encouraged to ask their friends for equipment so they can participate. Girls who don’t have full equipment can outline on their registration what pieces they need, and organizers will try to help.
On-ice sessions will be planned and coached by female hockey players, and Danica Dahlin, who grew up in Golden and now plays college hockey. The local women’s hockey team will also be assisting.
From October 4 to 6, the International Ice Hockey Foundation hosts the ninth annual World Girls’ Ice Hockey Weekend, with federations around the world participating in events that recruit, retain, and engage female players, coaches, officials, and fans. The event celebrates and grows the female game, and is a great way to make new friends on the ice.
“Because it’s a worldwide event, it’s fun to think there’s girls all over the world today out on the ice,” Pfisterer said.
The event takes place on Saturday, October 5 from 8:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. Girls are invited to register at www.goldenhockey.com.
