Elementary students at Similkameen Elementary Secondary School gathered in the school’s elementary gym to support and encourage anti bullying strategies on Wednesday, February 26.
Capably led by members of the school’s leadership class, the students were encouraged to imagine themselves as regular recipients of a bullying campaign.
The assembly then focussed on what constituted bullying, also providing instruction regarding how to deal with instances of it.
The heart of the message came with acknowledgement that bullying can rise from innocent circumstances from students who simply aren’t thinking of the consequences of their actions.
Leadership student Tina Schaefer talked about the challenges of getting through school and adolescence.
“We’re all faced with so many changes during these years, so what is there to gain by making things harder through bullying?” she asked her audience.
Leadership student Lloyd Carleton also offered helpful advice for students experiencing bullying. He pointed out a number of different avenues a student could follow at SESS for assistance, including enlisting the aid of other designated students, telling adults, or standing up for oneself.
