You love Golden—the beauty of the wetlands, the quiet of the forests, the wildness of the animals. That’s why you live here, recreate here or visit here.
You realize the importance of preserving the natural beauty of Golden so that locals, tourists and adventurers can enjoy it for years to come.
You do your part in “saving the environment,” whether by recycling, driving less, or growing a vegetable garden.
But sometimes you may find it hard to imagine that your efforts are having any real effect. You want to do something to make a difference in the town you live in, something you can see, something you can accomplish in a few hours.
Those are excellent reasons to attend the July 15 Golden Community Weed Pull.
For the past three years, Wildsight has organized Community Weed Pulls in Golden and other areas along the Columbia River.
These weed pulls have dramatically reduced the number of invasive weeds in treated areas. This summer, weed pull events are planned in Golden, Horse Creek and Radium Hot Springs.
You’re invited to take part in any (or all) of these fun events. As an added incentive, the Columbia Shuswap Regional District (CSRD) is sponsoring a free lunch at Bacchus Books Cafe for everyone who attends and participates tin he Golden Weed Pull.
To participate, meet at the Golden Pedestrian Bridge at 9 am on Friday, July 15.
Gloves and bags are provided, so you only need to bring yourself. During the weed pull, you’ll learn to identify the invasive weeds that are threatening the native plant ecology of Golden.
Invasive species are considered to be the second-largest threat to biodiversity worldwide, second only to habitat loss.
These species are introduced deliberately or unintentionally to an environment where they flourish and spread due to the absence of their natural enemies.
They out-compete native plants and agricultural crops for space, moisture, and nutrients. Invasive plants can destroy wildlife habitats, degrade the scenic beauty of the landscape, disrupt recreational activities, ruin agricultural areas, reduce biodiversity, and degrade water quality.
Community weed pulls teach you how to identify invasive plant species and remove them before they spread and threaten Golden’s natural habitats. By attending the Golden Community Weed Pull, you make a positive and direct contribution to preserving the beautiful landscapes of Golden. The events are sponsored by the CSRD, Columbia Basin Trust, Columbia Wetland Stewardship Partners and the Town of Golden, and organized by Wildsight.
