Good evening Kelowna!

A recap of what made news in the Central Okanagan as reported on our website Kelownacapnews.com

  • Nov. 14, 2016 6:00 p.m.

1. The sun came out today so something cheery to start off despite the fact the weather forecast called for rain today and again tomorrow with highs up to 7 or 8 C, and near zero at night. Hopefully the sun will show its face again tomorrow, but take not of the sub-zero temperatures called for this week at night if you haven’t put your snow tires on yet.

2. Kelowna won’t like this, the self-proclaimed centre of hockey in the Okanagan, but Penticton has been given the nod by Expedia as one of North America’s must-visit hockey towns along with Edmonton and Vancouver. Part of this acknowledgement is based on Penticton hosting the 2017 Western Canada Cup next spring, the junior A national championship tournament, the success of the Penticton Vees junior hockey club, the popular local hockey schools and growth of the Okanagan Hockey Academy.

3. The B.C. Southeast District RCMP folks received 53 calls to pick up a total of 109 firearms during the month-long B.C.-wide gun amnesty campaign just completed. Of the 109 firearms collected, there were 51 rifles, 20 handguns and 15 shotguns.

4. A Kelowna youngster, William Sollid-Gagner, is a 12-year-old who has taken a natural liking to cooking, and his venturing out with his growing culinary talents to become a finalist in the Little Potato Company Little Chef contest now underway on the Marilyn Dennis talk show on CTV. But he needs your vote to get invited to appear on the show.

5. On the Trump front in the U.S., either that 90-minute session with President Barack Obama last week has softened president-elect Donald Trump a little on many issues, or he is carrying out the traditional pivot of backing off the campaign promises that got him elected. But maybe that might be a good thing for the Excited States of America. He’s backed off on the wall, mass immigration deportation, scrapping all aspects of Obamacare and not made a radical right-wing choice for the key position of his chief of staff to embark on his plan to “drain the swamp” known as the U.S. Congress and influential lobbyists. The reality show carries on.
