Good morning, Kelowna. The sun is shining and the snow is melting. All signs point to it being a lovely day. Here are the big news stories to think about while you enjoy the warming weather friend.
1.) Environment Canada is reporting that we will see a mix of sun and cloud today with a 30 per cent chance of showers. The good news is that the high temperature will be 5 C. So throw caution to the wind and don’t wear your toque.
2.) The provincial health minister reiterated a call for a federal state of emergency to be called about the drug overdose deaths. There were eight new overdose deaths in Kelowna in December alone, bringing the city’s yearly total to 48 — more than double the overdose deaths of 2015.
In response Kelowna Lake Country MP Stephen Fuhr said that the feds are doing more, although they aren’t calling a state of emergency.
3.) While some may be closing schools, the Central Okanagan is expanding. At a Central Okanagan School District Planning and Facilities committee meeting, Jan. 18, members determined building a new middle school on the George Pringle Elementary school site while maintaining the existing elementary school was the best option for the district.
4.) When news broke this week that the Warriors would likely be leaving West Kelowna at the end of the current season, fans were distraught.
5.) Here’s a national story worth keeping an eye on. A study by the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences found almost 12 per cent of kids and youth with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, or ADHD, were prescribed antipsychotics like Risperdal, Zyprexa and Seroquel.
