More than 200 residents of White Rock and South Surrey took part in the annual Terry Fox run Sunday morning.
“It could well be the best (turnout) in recent years,” organizer Van Scoffield said.
“It’s been a fabulous morning.”
Eight-year-old Lucas Egitto, who ran the short course with his mother, Charlene, was the first to finish.
He was running for his grandfather, Derek Lucas, who has leukemia.
It was the 32nd Terry Fox run in a row for South Surrey resident Dave White, who has participated in every one since he was an elementary school student inspired by television images of Fox’s stubborn quest to get every Canadian to donate one dollar to fight cancer.
Now a married father of six and a grandfather of one, White says Fox remains an idol of his.
“He’s awesome,” White said.
“He just wouldn’t stop.”
White estimates $900 million would have been raised to fund cancer research by now if every Canadian simply gave the minimum donation asked by Fox every year.
