The Granny Scam has surfaced again in Vernon.
RCMP received a call Tuesday from an 83-year-old Vernon resident who reported being scammed out of nearly $1,000.
Police report the scam artist contacted the victim by telephone, posing as her granddaughter. The caller claimed that she had been arrested in Jamaica as a result of an accident and needed the money.
The caller then provided the victim instructions on how and where to send the money. The victim complied and sent the money, only to realize later that the whole thing was a scam.
“It is very unfortunate that the victim in this case had never heard of the Granny Scam,” said Vernon RCMP Cpl. Gerry Kovacs.
RCMP would like to remind the public to be aware of such calls, and to ask questions only family members would know the answer too.
“Remember, if it seems odd or unusual, it probably is,” said Kovacs. “These scams target our most vulnerable sector of society, our seniors, so please take time to educate your family and friends and neighbours.”
