Extremely dry conditions are posing a fire risk.
Lumby firefighters responded to a grass fire along Mabel Lake Road Wednesday at about 3:30 p.m.
“The neighbours had it under control by the time we got there,” said Tony Clayton, fire chief.
“It (fuels) is drying up a lot faster than we would expect at this time of the year. In the 27 years I have been in the fire department, this is the earliest we’ve had a grass fire. We haven’t had any spring rains yet.”
The incident occurred when a resident was doing some yard clean-up. A sudden gust of wind took control of her fire and the blaze spread quickly.
The fire, which grew to about an acre in size, posed a threat to a nearby home.
Clayton is urging residents to be cautious when burning.
They should have a water supply available as well as a shovel and a rake so they can tackle a fire.
“They also need sufficient manpower to help combat it if something happens,” said Clayton.
“Hopefully we’ll get the spring rains soon.”
