Robert Mellalieu is asking for assistance in repairing the roof of the aging Sea Cadet Hall in Maple Bay.
Owned by the Navy League, there are currently no funds available to repair the low-pitch gravel roof that has served the building where cadets from the 100 Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps Admiral Mainguy have been meeting for almost 50 years.
Mellalieu, a systems integrator with Kelowna’s F1 Computer Services, was a member of the corps several decades ago and is asking that other former cadets and interested members of the community come together to fix the roof.
Mellalieu and a group of people interested in the project have agreed to help fix the roof at no cost and they are hoping others will come forward to volunteer their time, expertise and materials as well.
He said the hall is an “invaluable community resource” that can’t afford to be lost.
“I’d really like to see these kids able to keep going to cadets in a safe environment,” Mellalieu said.
“I expect there have been about 30 cadets a year going through that building for almost 50 years, whose lives have been changed by the organization and who would want to help.”
Mellalieu said the total cost of the project has yet to be determined, but tax receipts can be issued to those who donate materials, and the names of donating companies can be placed on a plaque on site as a form of advertising.
“We’re thinking of having a good old-fashioned work party event, with the dates to be announced, to get the job done,” he said.
