The Salvation Army is set to drive away hunger at its ninth annual Charity Golf Classic Tuesday (June 25) at Cottonwood Golf Course.
For $140, golfers will get 18 holes of golf, a power cart, a warm up bucket of balls, a putting contest, a $40 tax receipt, dinner, the chance to win prizes and bid on silent auction items and the satisfaction of knowing that they have helped out some of Nanaimo’s neediest citizens.
Proceeds from the event, the organization’s second-largest fundraiser, will help the Salvation Army serve thousands of meals each month at its New Hope Centre, where the group also provides food hampers five days a week and emergency shelter.
“Apart from kettles, this is the only other big event we do,” said envoy Dawne Anderson, Nanaimo Salvation Army fundraising coordinator. “If you enjoy golf, this is your time. And you won’t leave without a prize.”
Registration starts at 11:30 a.m. and tee off time is 1 p.m.
Anderson said people are divided up into teams of four and even if people are a little rusty, the pressure is not on because all four players take the next shot after tee off from the location of the best shot.
“You don’t have to be a professional player, just come out and enjoy yourself,” she said.
Prizes include $5,000 from Auto Check Automotive for a hole-in-one and gift cards to restaurants, stores and entertainment venues.
After golfing, dinner is served and then participants have the chance to bid on a number of silent and live auction items, including Chemainus Theatre tickets, B.C. Lions tickets and a night’s stay in Vancouver, whale watching and a night’s accommodation in Tofino, and an Island golf travel card that allows the holder to play at different courses on the Island.
Anderson said the Salvation Army is looking for more golfers and also more prize donations.
