What was originally reported to Abbotsford Police as a home invasion shooting is now suspected to have been a self-inflicted wound.

A 38-year-old man is in hospital with non-life threatening injuries to his hand and leg following the shooting at a basement suite in the 3200 block of Cheam Drive at 8:50 a.m. on Sunday.

A female caller to 9-1-1 indicated to police that two unknown persons had entered the suite and shot her boyfriend.

“As a result of interviews conducted by major crime unit detectives and patrol division officers it is now clear that the incident was actually the result of an accidental discharge of a firearm,” said an Abbotsford Police press release.

A handgun has been seized and the investigation continues. It has not been determined whether the injuries were caused by two shots. They could have both been caused by a single bullet.

“The fact that police were able to determine that there was no dispute and that there were no armed suspects involved substantially decreases what were obvious initial public safety concerns,” added the release.
