Hacker demanding ransom from UFV

Threats to release students' personal information

Hackers are trying to extort money from the University of the Fraser Valley, while claiming to hold students’ personal information hostage, according to police.

The private information of a handful of students was emailed to dozens more students, with a threat that more information would be spread if a cash ransom was not paid, Const. Ian MacDonald said.

Both the Abbotsford Police and UFV have cybersecurity experts working on the issue, he said.

This is a developing story. More information is expected soon.
