The Canada Day festivities in Lake Country celebrating our country’s 150th birthday today are in full swing at Swalwell Park, 9950 Bottom Wood Lake Rd.
In past years, Beasley Park has played host to the birthday celebration.
The event planners felt Swalwell Park was a better option this year to host the planned day-long activities, with the day-long schedule of performers along with the water park for the young ones to cool off from the heat.
Parking is not accessible to the general public at the park but is being provided elsewhere at nearby George Elliot Secondary School, Winfield Memorial Hall, District of Lake Country Municipal Hall, and the Winfield Arena/Lake Country Curling Club. Free shuttle bus service will be available from these parking lots between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m.
The Canada Day festivities have been coordinated by The Rotary Club of Lake Country, working in partnership with the District of Lake Country and Heritage Canada.
“This year’s Canada Day celebration includes a full day of multi-cultural, family-oriented activities and has something for everyone” said Lake Countury event coordinator Dave Colquhoun, a Lake Country Rotarian.
The celebration began at 8 a.m. with a traditional pancake breakfast, hosted by Rotary, and then progresses to a full day of stage entertainment and tent exhibits which celebrate our ‘past, present and future together.’
Among the activities taking place this afternoon and later this evening are :
• Inflatable and play equipment for children, 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.
• Come to the ‘big tent’ to celebrate Lake Country history, including a historical photo booth, artifact display, and a ‘speaker’s corner, with stories from the past (hosted by the Lake Country Museum), 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
• Arnold & A. J. Akochuk, First Nation’s hoop dancing, 3-3:30 p.m.
• Music by ABBA Tribute, 4-4:45 p.m.
• Music by CYNK, 5-5:45 p.m.
• Music by Hip Replacements, 6-7:15 p.m.
• Music by Sista B and The Boys, 7:30-9:15 p.m.
• Outdoor movie screening of Beauty And The Beast, 9:30-11 p.m.
