Volunteer cleanup teams joined forces over the weekend to remove litter and debris along the Inner Harbour shoreline stretching over four kilometers from Fisherman’s Wharf to Spinnaker’s Brewpub.

Spearheaded by the Greater Victoria Harbour Authority and the Victoria Police Department, 50 volunteers from eight community teams removed more than 276 kilograms of garbage.

“It was a heartwarming way to spend a Saturday morning,” said Sonterra Ross, GVHA chief operating officer.

“The Inner Harbour is recognized as the jewel in Victoria’s crown and that was reflected this weekend as our harbour community rallied together to make sure the shoreline remains clean, healthy and accessible.”

For two hour Saturday, volunteers worked tirelessly to remove litter and to raise awareness for protecting the harbour ecosystem and promoting sustainability.

The inaugural event, while inspired by similar initiatives across Canada, is an entirely “made-in-Victoria harbour” solution to the scourge of litter along the shoreline.

Eight teams participated in the Victoria harbour cleanup, comprised of 50 volunteers from: GVHA, Victoria Police, Waste Management, Red Fish Blue Fish, Spinnakers, Inn at Laurel Point, Delta Hotel and Coast Harbour Hotel.
