Hemphill attends last council meeting

Port Hardy Councillor Jessie Hemphill attended her last council meeting Sept. 13.

There was a bittersweet moment at the Sept. 13 District of Port Hardy council meeting. Councillor Jessie Hemphill turned in her keys after what was her last council meeting.

Mayor Hank Bood presented Hemphill with a bouquet of flowers and a beautiful print, a move which prompted tears from the outgoing councillor.

“Jessie has done a fabulous job in a number of areas,” said Bood, a sentiment that was echoed around the table.

“I am so proud to be part of this council,” said Hemphill, who served her first term starting in 2011. Hemphill was the first First Nations person ever elected to Port Hardy Council and the youngest women ever.

Hemphill served as chair of the First Nations Relations Committee which was new this term.
