Hicks announces plans to run again

Regional Director looking at another three years

Enjoying what one does is often better than money in the bank.

Juan de Fuca Electoral Area Regional Director Mike Hicks enjoys what he does and with this realization he announced that he will be running again in the November election.

Three years ago, Hicks won his seat from Erik Lund, and said at the time that he “felt Port Renfrew was neglected by the CRD” and wanted to change the situation. He also said people had “lost trust and confidence in our system.”

Fast forward three years and Hicks feels his record will speak for itself. The controversy of the rural resource lands, court cases, the landowners and the Marine Trail development have all been big issues in the JDF and he wants to continue to see things through.

“Taking a little break mentally from the Marine Trail development made me realize I enjoy it,” said Hicks on May 25. The main reason he held off announcing he was running again was for family reasons. Once he got the thumbs up from his wife Kathy he announced his candidacy. He said he considered Sooke politics but felt his loyalties were to the people in the Juan de Fuca Electoral Area.

He said Sooke Mayor Janet Evans has been a tremendous partner.

“As a partner to the Juan de Fuca and me there couldn’t have been anyone better.”

He stated that the next new mayor would also have the same partnership.

“Everything I said I would do, I’ve done. We’ve been conservative with taxes and I feel pretty good about that,” he said in reference to property tax increases.

“I am looking forward to a spirited campaign and hopefully another three years working for residents of the Juan de Fuca.”
