High water advisory issued for B.C. Central Interior

The level of Shuswap Lake is expected to rise substantially with increased outflow from both the Salmon and Shuswap rivers.

The Shuswap Emergency Program (SEP) advises that the BC River Forecast Centre has issued a High Streamflow Advisory for the Central Interior.

A significant low-pressure system is expected to bring an eastern flow of moist air through the Interior over the next several days.

Heavy rainfall in excess of 50 to 75 mm is expected over five days beginning May 21 for the section of the Central Interior stretching from Princeton, north to the Puntzi Lake area of the Chilcotin.

River levels are expected to begin rising rapidly beginning Wednesday, with the potential for further rises later in the week.

It is anticipated the level of Shuswap Lake will rise substantially with increased outflow from both the Salmon and Shuswap rivers.

Shuswap Emergency Program officials emphasize the need for residents in possible flood zones to take action to prevent damage to their property.

“Residents are responsible for having a personal plan, as well as the tools and equipment necessary to protect their homes and properties,” says an emergency program public advisory released at 4 p.m. today.
