High winds bring short-term power outage

High winds left about 200 homes in South Oak Bay without power for five hours Sunday night.

A fir tree on Denison Road lost some limbs, which pulled down a hydro line at about 10:40 p.m. B.C. Hydro spokesperson Ted Olynyk said crews removed the limbs and left them beside the road, which an Oak Bay parks crew picked up later that morning. The power was restored by 3:30 a.m.

Wind speeds of more than 70 kilometres per hour were recorded at the University of Victoria’s school network station located at Monterey middle school. Environment Canada said gusts reached 93 km/hr, with sustained winds at 65 km/hr.

The only tree that came down in the storm was a cherry tree in Anderson Hill Park, say Oak Bay arborist Chris Paul.
