Four hikers had an unexpected adventure near Cherryville Sunday.
RCMP and Vernon Search and Rescue received a report at about 5:50 p.m. of four individuals being lost in the North Fork Road area.
“They go lost through a spectacular storm. They got turned around,” said Leigh Pearson, with Vernon Search and Rescue.
Once they decided they couldn’t find their way out, the hikers — two men and two women between the ages of 27 and 32 — used weak cellular service to call a relative. Emergency personnel were then notified.
Beyond the Search and Rescue volunteers, the RCMP mobilized its search dogs and a helicopter.
The helicopter pilot was able to get in close proximity to the hikers by following the ping of the cellular phone.
“They had a fire going and the pilot saw the smoke,” said Pearson.
Once contact was made, the hikers were transported out of the area.
“Nobody was injured in this case,” said Gord Molendyk, RCMP spokesperson.
