One man was taken to hospital after a Burne Avenue home went up in flames just before 5 a.m. Sunday.

Kelowna firefighters responded to the call at 4:50 a.m. after a 911 caller reported flames coming from a neighbour’s deck.

The first crews on the scene noticed heavy black smoke and flames coming from the side of a two-storey residential home.

Three engines, one rescue vehicle, one command vehicle and a safety truck, along with 10 personnel, responded to the scene with assistance from the RCMP, BC Ambulance Service and Fortis BC.

Firefighters found one person in the house and he was taken to hospital with smoke inhalation and burns to his hands.

After confirming that all residents were out of the house, Kelowna Fire Department crews worked to extinguish the fire.

The house was completely lost in the blaze—the owner is insured. Neighbours’ houses received minor smoke and heat damage.

Emergency Social Services was called and assisted five adults.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown; a fire investigator was on scene Sunday morning.
