Honk if you want proportional representation

Local proportional representation advocates, Jean Nelson and Sandra Holmes, took their signs near Clearwater’s roundabout on Oct. 5, encouraging passersby to consider voting for proportional representation.

“We have to do what we have to do, that’s the thing,” said Nelson, of taking to the streets and advocating for the electoral system.

Nelson added what she likes about the idea of proportional representation is that every votes counts.

Under the current first-past-the-post system, a party who only gets 30 per cent of the total vote can end up with 100 per cent of the power to make changes, which she said, over the sound of a motorist honking at her sign, hardly seems fair.

“Proportional representation is going to see to it that all of those votes that otherwise wouldn’t count are going to amount to something.”
