Hospice goes virtual due to COVID-19

The society will have a new office space to start April

The Golden Hospice Society has made the transition to virtual during the COVID-19 pandemic, with Judy Doyle saying the society continues to be open to referrals over the phone and online.

The hospice society, which provides support to the community of Golden and the valley at large, closed its office on Nov. 19 as a part of the B.C. wide restrictions that will be in effect until Jan. 8 at the earliest.

Doyle anticipates they will be back in their office, which will be located at the Senior’s Centre, on April 1, if the restrictions allow it.

While they may not be able to meet in person, the society understand the importance of supporting the community and their clients right now.

“It’s so important because this is a time where people really need to feel that support and people need to know that we are out here and we are available,” said Doyle.

“Just because our office space isn’t there doesn’t mean that we’re not our here and our volunteers are all ready and willing to step up to the plate.”

Doyle says the hospice group is here to serve everyone of all ages and demographics and are willing to provide emotional support to those who need it.

Especially heading into the holiday season, which is already an emotionally vulnerable time for many in a non-COVID year, she says it’s more important than ever to reach out to help if you need it.

“Reach out to people, there’s always someone out there to listen,” Doyle said.

“Don’t be afraid to do that and look for support.

“You don’t have to do it all on your own.”

Due to COVID, the society will not be able to host the Memorial Tree of Life fundraiser because of public health restrictions on public gatherings.

Instead, the society wants to host a different fundraiser in the summer, once new office space has been established and hopefully the COVID pandemic has calmed down.

Those looking to get in touch with the contact society can do so over the phone or Facebook.
