Crew members from the B.C. Wildfire Service will conduct a hover-exit exercise in Qualicum Beach on Wednesday as part of their training for the 2016 firefighting season, the Wildfire Service announced Friday.
The exercise, scheduled for 2:30 p.m. at Qualicum Beach Airport, will involve members performing exits and entries of a helicopter as it hovers above the ground.
The training is to prepare firefighters for safely leaving a helicopter when it is unable to touch down due to rocky or uneven terrain.
Prior to the airborne exercise, the firefighters will practise the same manoeuvers, beginning at 1:30 p.m., while the chopper is on the ground, using the same airborne protocols.
All times are approximate, the B.C. Wildfire Service said.
