The Williams Lake Salvation army has distributed more food hampers in each of the first five months of this year than it has at any time in the same five months since 2007.
On May 31, the Salvation Army is reminding the public of hunger in the community and around the world.
Canada ranks eighth in the United Nations Human Development Index and has a median after-tax family income of $63,000, yet thousands of Canadians struggle to get enough food every month in Canada.
In 2010, nearly 900,000 people were assisted by a food bank in an average month. That is the highest level of food bank use on record. On Hunger Awareness Day, Canadians are encouraged to adopt changes that can have a positive effect on the issue of hunger in the country.
Food Banks Canada, the national organization representing the Canadian food banks, along with the Williams Lake food bank, encourage the public to take action by changing what they know about hunger;Â changing how they support the food bank by donating most-needed food items such as pasta, rice, canned meats and fish, dry and canned soups and stews, canned fruit and vegetables, breakfast cereal; and volunteering or becoming a monthly donor.
On May 31 the Williams Lake food bank will hold an open house to raise awareness of the issue of hunger in Williams Lake and surrounding area. The food bank and soup kitchen will be open for public tours between 3 and 6 p.m. The public is invited to attend. For more information contact the Salvation Army at 250-392-2429.
