Hwy16 overpass scheduled over CN tracks west of Terrace

The federal and provincial governments will pay the $37 million cost

A vehicle overpass will be built over CN’ s rail crossing on Highway 16 50km west of Terrace, the federal and provincial governments announced yesterday.

The increasing rail traffic to the port in Prince Rupert prompted the two levels of government to pledge $37 million for the project at a press conference in Terrace.

Currently, the highway crosses the tracks at a level crossing on a sharp ‘S’ curve with rumble strips, a lower speed limit, and warning signs and traffic is held back when the tracks are in use.

B.C. transportation minister Todd Stone and Prince George MP Bob Zimmer were on hand to announce the respective $19.5 million and $17.5 million contributions to the re-aligning and grade separation for a two-kilometre stretch of highway.

Safety concerns at the crossing were raised earlier this year after rail traffic to Prince Rupert’s port facilities became busier.

The level crossing is the last of its kind along Hwy 16 in the province.
