Icy conditions blamed in single-vehicle incident in Ootischenia

The accident happened on Columbia Road just outside of Castlegar

Icy roads are believed to be responsible for sending a vehicle off the road and onto its side on Tuesday, Dec. 22.

The incident happened just after 8:30 a.m. near 843 Columbia Road in Ootischenia on the way to the landfill.

BC Ambulance was first on scene. They were able to stabilize the patient quickly. He was reported to have minor injuries, but was transported to hospital for further assessment.

The Ootischenia Fire Department (OFD) also responded to the scene with two apparatus and six firefighters. OFD ensured the vehicle was safe and that there were no leaking fluids. They also provided traffic control at the scene.

OFD chief Len Coates said the road conditions were extremely slippery and icy at the time.

Road contractor YRB was called in to sand the road, and Coates said they responded quickly.

“A reminder that we are in freeze-thaw abnormal conditions and to use caution with reduced speeds,” said Coates.
