There could soon be a crackdown on Lumby residents who leave their vehicles running.
Coun. Randal Ostafichuk wants the anti-noise bylaw amended to include the excessive idling of personal cars and trucks.
“Anyone with a diesel truck warming up at 2 a.m. is causing a problem for the neighbours,” he said.
Currently, the bylaw only refers to commercial motor vehicles running in a residential area for more than three minutes. The fine is $100.
Ostafichuk says adding residential vehicles to the bylaw would provide village staff and the RCMP the ability to provide enforcement.
“It gives them a little more teeth,” he said.
“Another side benefit is it reinforces our green stance. It (anti-idling) reduces greenhouse gases.”
Council has made no decision regarding Ostafichuk’s request.
“We want to see if other municipalities have similar clauses in their bylaws,” he said.
Council also wants to determine if expanding the scope of the bylaw would have a financial impact on bylaw enforcement.
