Illegal dumping continues to frustrate local residents and officials.
The Electoral Area Advisory Committee has instructed the Safe Communities Unit to investigate ways to deal with people who break the law by leaving garbage in rural areas.
“We need to decrease the amount of crap people are throwing around with a total disregard for the community,” said Mike Macnabb, BX-Silver Star director.
In the most recent case, the Regional District of North Okanagan was forced to clean up an illegal dump site at the end of Hartnell Road in the BX. Another problem area is off Mabel Lake Road in rural Enderby.
“Everyone pays for the stupidity of one person,” said Macnabb, adding that illegal dumping is not only unsightly but it creates a wildfire and wildlife threat.
Broken glass and other items can also pose a public safety risk.
Among the possible options being considered to curb illegal dumpers are surveillance cameras or security officers.
Macnabb isn’t sure why some people insist on illegal dumping when regional district landfills are fairly close and the fee to use the landfills is inexpensive.
“Cost out the fuel to get to the top of Hartnell Road, it’s ridiculous,” he said.
