All that is left of a Spallumcheen barn is a smouldering ruin.
The 60-foot-by-40-foot structure in the 4600 block of Lansdowne Road was engulfed in flames after 7 p.m. Friday.
“The whole building was fully involved when crews arrived,” said Alistair Crick, with the Armstrong-Spallumcheen Fire Department.
“When the owner became aware of the fire, the building was already fully involved.”
There was little that could be done to rescue the barn.
“There were adjacent exposures with other barns and we got water on those buildings which were steaming. We were able to save the other buildings,” said Crick.
Water supply proved to be an issue as the nearest hydrant is a kilometre away.
Anything that was in the large barn was destroyed by the flames.
“There were one or two vehicles inside,” said Crick, adding that the farm was supposed to host a plowing match Saturday.
The extent of the destruction has made it challenging for investigators looking for a cause.
“It’s undetermined but possibly electrical,” said Crick.
