Concerned community workers are coming together to tackle homelessness among youth in Mission.
Since May 2013, youth workers from Mission Community Services, the Ministry of Children and Family Development, Youth Unlimited, Mission Friendship Centre, alongside the RCMP’s Youth Liaison Officer, have been meeting to figure out what might be done to provide resources and shelter to homeless youth aged 18 and under. Staff from Abbotsford’s Cyrus Centre have also been involved.
“We hope to move from discussion stage to action stage in 2014 and have some ideas that we are working on,” said Barry McLeod, program director with Mission Youth Unlimited.
Organizers invite residents to a community information night about the issue of youth homelessness in Mission on Tuesday, Jan. 14 at 7 p.m. at the Mission Leisure Centre’s room four.
“Please join us at that meeting to hear more about the possible initiatives and to see how you might be able to get involved,” said McLeod.
Volunteers are especially needed for fundraising, resource gathering, direct work with youth, facilities renovation and maintenance, and food preparation.
