Wells Gray Information Centre is open for the season as of Monday, April 23, according to Tay Briggs of Information Wells Gray, the non-profit society that runs the Infocentre.
Briggs said that opening the Infocentre a week earlier than it would otherwise was an effort to increase tourism business during the shoulder season.
The early opening is the result of a partnership between Information Wells Gray and Tourism Wells Gray, the local destination marketing organization.
The Infocentre also will be closed one week later than it would otherwise.

“That means the Clearwater-Wells Gray Park Information Centre will be open the 23rd of April and finish for the season on the 19th of October,” she said. “During the shoulder seasons most travellers do not have solid itineraries and are open to friendly suggestions. At the Information Centre our job is to get them to pause in their travels and get a taste of what our valley has to offer.”
She added that because the one-way access into Wells Gray Park requires sightseers to come back to Clearwater, convincing travellers to explore further means that the staff at the centre can also generate a night’s stay in local accommodation and dinner out at local restaurants.
“We know from experience that the people we can get to stop for a quick visit often pick up brochures and other information for longer stays in the future,” Briggs said.
