InMemoriam remembers lives lost

The event honoured those who died in the community without recognition

Members of the public gathered in Gyro Park on Aug. 25 for InMemoriam, an event to remember individuals in the community whom have passed away without recognition.

For Mandie Fewchuk and volunteers with Victory Church who hosted the event, this cause was personal.

“For myself, and the rest of the partners in the community that work in the front line services, we’ve lost a lot of people that we care about. We’ve either served them or we’ve been related to them in some way,” said Fewchuk. “It was important for us to be able to properly remember and memorialize these individuals.”

The event featured a video presentation, refreshments provided by Victory Church, live performances, and more. Fewchuk said that the organizers were trying to “keep it simple” as this is the first year of what they hope will become an annual event.

Attendees were also able to add to a mural in honour of those who have lost their lives. Fewchuk said while many of the individuals that were being honoured were homeless, they weren’t the only demographic they were trying to bring awareness too.

“These people may not necessarily have been homeless, some may have been low-income, others may have suffered from mental disabilities,” said Fewchuk.
